St Aidan's High School pupil Connor Storey enjoyed a double-whammy when selected by scottishathletics for the National Futures Squad last week.

The 17-year-old Shotts athlete, who throws for Law & District AAC, was originally selected for the shot put at the games against Wales and Ireland in Aberdeen.

But following an injury to the Scottish discus thrower, Connor was asked to double up and celebrated with not one, but two lifetime bests on the day.

Connor, who is coached by Don McLeod at Law & District, said: "This is the first time I've ever been called up for a national squad and it was great to get the chance to throw discus as well as shot put.

"It was a great experience and makes all the hard work and training over the years worthwhile."

Connor started in athletics when he took part in a "come and try" session before he went to St Aidan's. He said: "I seemed to have a natural ability for all the throws and ironically, the hammer is probably my best event.

"The coaching I'm receiving at Law & District has really helped my technique and my performances are improving all the time."

Don McLeod said: "We have a very promising group of throwers at Law and I am really pleased with the application and determination of our athletes. Connor is a perfect example of that attitude. They are hungry to learn and give of their best and that makes it really enjoyable to coach them."
